The Yassawa islands for western Fiji
The first days of the Fiji to Vanuatu voyage allowed Soren Larsen to revisit the Yassawa group and inspired Nick to wax lyrical in the style of a young Lord Bryon...

The Yasawas

Joining day dawned with its usual fun
Plans were twice layed then changed on the run
Once all were aboard and everything stowed
Our new Captain Sally our course to us showed

The new voyage crew we all shown the lines
Were issued with harness and warned of beer fines
The ship on the sea and the wind in our hair
Before we all knew it we were practically there.

Once the anchor was dropped and the Tarzan rope out
It was time for some fun, no one had a doubt
The deckhands went first and sky larked about
Then was heard “My turn” the mate he did shout
With a mighty big leap over the side he did swing
To see a flying Jim is a memorable thing.

A ball he produced and a rum he'd present
If from a kick, o'er the deck house, said ball could be sent
The ball he did throw and the swingers kept kicking
Determined to do it and not take a licking.

The sun it was setting and all nearly spent
When the chippy he kicked it right over the roof that ball went
The rum he did drink in one triumphant draught
“Bloody typical”, a fellow deckhand did laugh.

Then on the ship sailed
As mysteries of Fiji were slowly unveiled
On to the village, Namara by name.
For swimming and hiking for all who were game.

The villagers showed us all how to weave
Made us all welcome and not want to leave
The evening we feasted on food we provided
Something was fishy, no way to hide it.

After we ate we all drank some kava
I'm sure some preferred a hot cup of java.
The deckies and cook they drank through the night
The mood it was chilled and all felt alright.

The next day we sailed on to the school
We heard of a mural there that looked really cool.
Upon our arrival we were taken by hand
by lots of small kiddies who ran through the sand

They showed us their lunch room, they showed us their class
Then we played rugby and rolled in the grass.
They sung us some songs and showed us around
Soon some of us tired and sat on the ground.

Once more we weighed anchor and took to the sea
To get to the village of Nalauwaki
There we saw dancing and a very fine show
but as often the case, twas soon time to go.
