At Sea - Steve's pictures

Soren's owners Steve and Rosie joined the ship in Easter Island for the voyage to Pitcairn - here are some of his pictures and comments from the sailing passage ..

At sea
Those of us who joined in Easter Island had a baptism of fire.

As soon as we were under way and out of the lee of the land our world did not stop moving until even after we’d been ashore at Pitcairn for a couple of days and regained our “land legs”.

We made record time to Pitcairn which was great as it gave us the chance to spend more time ashore on this fascinating island.

Another day at the office for Captain Jim,
the 2nd Mate Gareth and the Ship’s Carpenter Darren.

(note only the Shetlander isn't bothering with wet weather gear..)

Chris, who’d been onboard since Auckland,
knew the best place to be in rough weather.

Aloft

The beautiful weather and Trade Wind sailing between Pitcairn and Mangareva allowed time for some maintenance to be carried out aloft.

Carl is enjoying oiling down the standing rigging from the bosun's chair.

Miranda and Carl clipped on to the course yard - taking the opportunity to scrap down and varnish the spar while the course sail is being repaired on deck.

On the 22nd of May, we anchored for a couple of hours at the outer reef in the Gambier Archipelago so that those of us who felt inclined could swim with the sharks.

That afternoon we headed north towards the Marquesas 900 or so miles away.

The idea was to use traditional Polynesian Navigation techniques and aim for the Island of Fatu Hiva and hope for the best. As you will see we also used some less than traditional techniques when we first set off. The sun disappeared behind a blanket of cloud and there was no wind or swell to speak of which is why our erstwhile helmsperson, Katy is looking astern at the island of Mangareva in an attempt to keep it behind us!!

Later she had some help from George our well trained, professional 1st Mate.

Something on the starboard bow has caught Ross, xx and Christine's attention.

Master and apprentice.
Emma wins Jim's competition to be the first to sight land .. Fatu Hiva after xx sailing by means of Polynesia navigation from xxx.

Birthdays in a bar far, far away.

Rosie celebrated her birthday in Easter Island with the help of two of her admirers – dancers from the Matato’a.
