| The
Great Auckland Refit 2002
20th April 2002
Three months have been
set aside from Soren Larsen's sailing schedule to tackle
planned maintenance and another stage of the ship's restoration
process. The Aft end below decks is to be refurbished
- i.e. the navigation area, Master's, Mate's and Engineer's
cabin are being totally rebuilt.
Four main areas are underway
at the moment - the aft dek and aft hatch coaming, the
nav area and captain and mates cabins, the engine room
and on the hull the chainplates that hold attach the mainmast
shrouds.
Rennovation work is never
very pretty. Past crew will nod knowingly but new viewers
and prospective voyage crew need not be alarmed - this
is the stuff wooden ship refits are made of. Here are
a few images from the battleground last week;-
